But perhaps that picture is too small. The deeper problem is what is happening to the great circulation of water through soil, vegetation, rivers, wetlands, groundwater and atmosphere\u2014and what happens to life when that circulation is disrupted.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something wonderfully ordinary about water. We turn on a tap and expect it to appear. Rain falls, rivers flow, plants grow, clouds gather and disperse, and because water is woven so completely into everyday life it is easy to think of it primarily as a resource: something that can be stored in a reservoir, pumped from an aquifer, diverted through a pipe, used to irrigate a field or treated until it is safe to drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of those things matter, of course, but thinking about water simply as a resource can obscure something much more fundamental about it. Water is continually moving through the living Earth, falling as rain and snow, entering soils, replenishing wetlands and aquifers, flowing through rivers, being taken up by plants and returning to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration, before gathering again as clouds and eventually falling somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we learned at school to call the <strong>water cycle<\/strong> is therefore much more than a convenient diagram explaining where rain comes from. It is one of the fundamental processes through which the Earth remains habitable, and there is growing reason for concern that human activity is disturbing that process in ways we are only beginning to appreciate fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changes the way we need to think about what we rather loosely call the global water crisis. If we understand the problem principally as water scarcity, our attention naturally turns towards finding more water, storing more of it, transporting it from one place to another, desalinating seawater or using existing supplies more efficiently. All of these may be necessary, but they address only part of the problem. We also need to understand what has been happening to the landscapes and living systems through which water moves, and what might be involved in restoring their capacity to receive, retain, circulate and release water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The water we don&#8217;t usually see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the interesting developments in water science has been a growing appreciation of the distinction between what researchers describe as <strong>blue water<\/strong> and <strong>green water<\/strong>. Blue water is the water most of us instinctively think about\u2014the water in rivers and lakes and beneath our feet in groundwater\u2014whereas green water is less obvious because it includes the moisture held within soils and the enormous movement of water through vegetation and the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This apparently simple distinction changes our understanding of the problem. The Stockholm Resilience Centre&#8217;s work on planetary boundaries now considers disturbances to both blue and green water when assessing freshwater change. In other words, we cannot adequately understand what is happening to the water cycle simply by measuring the water remaining in our rivers, reservoirs and aquifers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also need to consider what happens when a forest loses its capacity to retain and cycle moisture, when soil becomes compacted, eroded or depleted of organic matter, when wetlands are drained or vegetation is removed from a catchment. We need to consider what happens when rain that might once have infiltrated a healthy landscape instead falls onto degraded or impermeable surfaces and rapidly becomes runoff, sometimes contributing to flooding in one place while leaving insufficient moisture in the soil somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seen in this way, these are not separate environmental problems that happen to involve water. They are interconnected expressions of what is happening to the water cycle, and once we begin looking at water in this broader way it becomes increasingly difficult to separate it from many of the other ecological challenges we face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water doesn&#8217;t recognise our categories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of modern life has become extraordinarily specialised. We tend to treat agriculture as one subject, forests as another, urban development as another, climate change as another, biodiversity as another and water management as still another. This may be administratively convenient, but nature doesn&#8217;t organise itself according to the departments, disciplines and professional boundaries we have created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When vegetation is removed, what happens to rainfall can change. When soils are degraded, their ability to absorb and retain water can change with them. When wetlands are drained, we lose ecosystems that not only provide habitat but can store and slowly release water, trap sediments, influence water quality and help moderate flooding. When rivers and floodplains are altered, the movement of water through entire landscapes is affected, while the warming of the atmosphere and oceans influences evaporation, precipitation, snow and ice, and the occurrence and severity of droughts and floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why I have come to think that water is not simply another environmental issue alongside climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and pollution. It is one of the threads running through all of them, and wetlands provide a particularly good illustration of what this means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For generations, wetlands in many parts of the world were regarded as inconvenient places that could be drained so that the land could be put to some more obviously productive use. Yet when we look more closely at what a healthy wetland actually does, we discover that it is quietly performing a remarkable range of functions. It stores and gradually releases water, provides habitat, traps sediments, affects water quality, helps moderate flooding and supports extraordinarily rich biological communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we understand this, ecological restoration begins to look rather different. Restoring a wetland isn&#8217;t simply a matter of beautifying a landscape or protecting habitat for wildlife, important though those things are. It can also be part of restoring the functioning of the water cycle itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same principle applies when we restore vegetation beside rivers, improve the ability of agricultural soils to absorb and retain moisture, reconnect rivers with floodplains where that can safely be done, or design towns and cities so that rainfall has opportunities to enter the landscape rather than immediately being treated as something to be carried away through drains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this means that we can somehow dispense with engineering. Human communities will continue to need reservoirs, water-treatment plants, pipes, sanitation systems, irrigation infrastructure and increasingly sophisticated technologies. What interests me is the possibility of bringing these things into a more intelligent relationship with the Earth&#8217;s own living systems, so that our engineered solutions work with ecological processes rather than continually attempting to substitute for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And then there is the toilet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The connection between the water crisis and sanitation brings the discussion much closer to everyday life, because most of us rarely stop to think about the curious arrangement we have inherited in the conventional flush toilet. We take clean or treated water, use it to transport human waste away from a building and then invest enormous amounts of infrastructure and energy in dealing with the wastewater that results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we have grown up with this system, it can easily seem as though this is simply what a toilet is and how sanitation necessarily works. Yet there are circumstances in which conventional sewerage is entirely appropriate and others in which it makes considerably less sense, particularly in remote communities, off-grid dwellings, environmentally sensitive locations, temporary facilities, disaster-relief settings and water-stressed regions where alternative forms of sanitation can dramatically reduce, or in some cases entirely eliminate, the use of water for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I find this interesting because the humble toilet becomes an example of a much larger change in thinking. Instead of always beginning with the question of where we can obtain more water, we can also examine how intelligently we are using the water we already have. Instead of automatically treating rainfall as something that needs to be removed from buildings and urban landscapes as quickly as possible, we can think about how it might be captured, retained and allowed to replenish the landscape. And instead of thinking of wastewater only as something to dispose of, we can consider what can safely be treated, recovered and reused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanitation, in other words, belongs within the global water conversation rather than sitting somewhere to one side of it, and that relationship will be particularly relevant as the international community turns its attention towards water later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A global conversation about water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <strong>8\u201310 December 2026<\/strong>, governments, organisations, researchers, practitioners and others from around the world will gather in the United Arab Emirates for the <strong>2026 United Nations Water Conference<\/strong>, co-hosted by Senegal and the UAE. The Conference is intended to accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 6 and the wider international commitment to ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/conferences\/water2026?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">2026 United Nations Water Conference<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What particularly interests me about the Conference is the breadth of the conversation it represents, because the global water crisis cannot sensibly be reduced to a single problem awaiting a single technological solution. Safe water and sanitation are obviously fundamental human concerns, but water is equally bound up with ecosystems, agriculture and food production, cities, industry, energy, climate change, biodiversity, pollution, public health, poverty, finance, governance and international cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Underlying all of these is the extraordinary natural process that makes freshwater continually available to life: the water cycle itself. This is one reason I think the Conference offers an important opportunity not merely to ask how humanity can provide more people with access to water, essential though that is, but to consider more deeply what we need to do to protect and restore the systems through which freshwater is continually renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Whole Life Times is turning its attention to water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is partly for this reason that the <strong>October\u2013December 2026 issue of <em>Whole Life Times<\/em> will have a particular focus on water<\/strong>. I don&#8217;t envisage it simply as an issue about water scarcity, because I would like us to explore water in the broader sense we have been considering here: freshwater and sanitation certainly, but also rivers and wetlands, soil and vegetation, oceans, snow and ice, climate, ecological restoration, human health, technology and our relationship with the living systems upon which we depend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This gives us an opportunity to bring together voices and ideas that might ordinarily appear in quite different conversations, and the timing seems particularly appropriate. The October\u2013December issue will appear in the lead-up to the <strong>2026 United Nations Water Conference in the United Arab Emirates from 8\u201310 December 2026<\/strong>, allowing <em>Whole Life Times<\/em> to contribute in its own way to the much larger international conversation taking place around water, sanitation, ecological restoration and the future of SDG 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also hope that the issue will encourage readers to see connections between subjects that might otherwise appear unrelated. An article about climate change may also be an article about water. A discussion of forests can become a discussion of rainfall and atmospheric moisture. An examination of agriculture leads naturally into questions about soil and groundwater, while sanitation raises questions about how and why we use potable water in the ways we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is very much the kind of conversation I would like <em>Whole Life Times<\/em> to encourage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Global Water Crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the magazine, I am developing a book entitled <em><strong>The Global Water Crisis: Why the Future of Humanity Depends on Restoring the Water Cycle<\/strong><\/em>, which will give me considerably more room to explore these relationships and, in particular, the proposition contained in its subtitle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question I want to explore is whether our response to the global water crisis needs to extend beyond managing scarcity towards understanding what we have done to the water cycle itself and how we might begin repairing some of that damage. That inevitably takes us into forests and soils, wetlands and rivers, groundwater and agriculture, cities and their impermeable surfaces, as well as the effects of a changing climate. It also takes us out to sea, because the circulation of water obviously doesn&#8217;t stop when a river reaches the coast. Oceans, evaporation, atmospheric circulation, snowfields, glaciers and polar ice are all part of the same planetary story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seen from that perspective, the global water crisis becomes one of the clearest illustrations I can think of for why fragmented thinking is no longer adequate to the problems we face. The October\u2013December issue of <em>Whole Life Times<\/em> and the book can therefore complement one another, with the magazine bringing together different voices and perspectives while the book allows for a more sustained exploration of the relationships between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ecowaterlesstoilets.com\/books\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">The Global Water Crisis \u2014 book information<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, I don&#8217;t want this exploration of water to remain only an intellectual exercise. The more we understand the scale and interconnectedness of the problem, the more important it becomes to ask what practical contribution we can make, however modest that contribution may initially be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From understanding to helping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the <strong>Waterless Sanitation Assistance Fund (WSAF)<\/strong> enters the picture. The Fund is intended to help support access to waterless sanitation in situations where conventional water-dependent sanitation may be impractical, unaffordable or environmentally inappropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ecowaterlesstoilets.com\/donate\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Waterless Sanitation Assistance Fund (WSAF)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is always a danger when discussing planetary crises that the conversation remains at the level of analysis. We can write articles and books, produce reports, organise conferences and become increasingly sophisticated in the way we describe a problem, while people continue living without adequate sanitation and the ecological systems on which we all depend continue to deteriorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, understanding becomes much more meaningful when it begins to inform practical action. Waterless sanitation is certainly not <em>the<\/em> answer to the global water crisis, and I would not want to suggest that it is. It is, however, one practical example of the different possibilities that emerge when we stop assuming that freshwater must be used for every purpose for which we have historically used it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where safe and appropriate sanitation can be provided without consuming water that communities need for drinking, food production and other essential purposes, that possibility deserves serious consideration. WSAF is one way of beginning to translate that understanding into something tangible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From scarcity to regeneration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This brings me back to the idea of <strong>restoration<\/strong>, because I think it offers a particularly fruitful way of broadening the water conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are real physical limits to freshwater availability, and in many places the imbalance between supply and human demand is already severe. If we think only in terms of scarcity, however, it is easy to imagine a fixed quantity of water that humanity must somehow divide more efficiently. A regenerative perspective doesn&#8217;t deny those limits, but it encourages us to look at what is happening to the systems through which water is continually received, stored, circulated and renewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That leads us naturally to the soil beneath our feet and what happens when rain reaches it. From there we begin thinking about vegetation, wetlands, rivers and groundwater, and about whether the water we extract is being replenished at anything like the rate at which we remove it. Agriculture becomes part of the water story because the capacity of healthy soil to absorb and retain moisture matters enormously. Cities become part of it because roofs, roads, gardens, parks, wetlands and drainage systems all affect what happens to rain after it falls. Pollution belongs in the same conversation because freshwater that we contaminate has to be treated or restored before it can safely return to human or ecological use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even sanitation begins to look different when viewed from this perspective. The question is no longer simply how efficiently we can dispose of human waste using the systems we inherited, but whether those systems make the best use of water in every circumstance and what alternatives might sometimes make more sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gradually, then, the conversation begins to shift. We are no longer thinking only about how to find more water, but about how to restore the conditions in which water can continue circulating through healthy living systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I find that shift encouraging because restoration is something human beings can participate in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A different way of seeing a river<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the simplest way of bringing all of this together is to imagine ourselves standing beside a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can measure its flow, test its chemistry and calculate how much water might safely be extracted from it, and all of that tells us something important. But the river we are looking at is also the visible expression of processes occurring throughout its catchment. Its condition reflects rain that may have fallen many kilometres away and the soils, forests, farms, roads, towns, wetlands and groundwater through which that rain has subsequently moved. It may also reflect decisions made years or decades earlier about land clearing, drainage, irrigation and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we follow that river downstream, it eventually becomes part of an estuary and then the ocean, while some of its water will evaporate, enter the atmosphere and perhaps fall as rain somewhere else. There is no point along that journey at which nature conveniently observes the boundaries between the subjects, jurisdictions and institutions into which we have divided the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is one of the things water can teach us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It continually crosses boundaries, moving between atmosphere and land, plants and soil, one community and another, one nation and another, and ultimately between freshwater and ocean systems. Caring adequately for water therefore requires us to think in relationships, and perhaps that is the deeper challenge hidden within what we call the global water crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanity certainly needs secure access to freshwater, but achieving that in the decades ahead will require much more than simply finding additional sources of water. It will also depend upon the health of our soils and forests, wetlands and rivers, groundwater and oceans, agricultural landscapes and cities, together with the sanitation systems and technologies we choose to develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we can begin to understand water not merely as a commodity to be extracted and consumed, but as something continually circulating through the living systems of the Earth, then the global water crisis begins to look different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, importantly, so do the possibilities for responding to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Homepage editorial tags:<\/strong> <code>Water<\/code> \u00b7 <code>Sustainable Living<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When we think about a water crisis, we tend to imagine a place where there simply isn&#8217;t enough water.
