Travel can be about rest, discovery and pleasure, but it also has consequences. How we move between places affects climate, energy use, landscapes and communities. Read in WLT 2023 #1Much contemporary tourism depends upon aviation, yet flying — and private aviation in particular — can carry a very large climate cost. Sustainable tourism therefore cannot be defined only by what happens after a traveller reaches a destination. The transport used to get there is part of the environmental equation.
In his Whole Life Times article Affluence Begets Effluence, Rowland Benjamin makes the scale vivid:
“A single short to medium length private jet flight can emit 5 tonnes of CO₂ and a long-haul transcontinental flight can emit up to 30 tonnes. By comparison the global average person emits about 4 - 5 tonnes per year.”
That comparison makes clear why Whole Life Times should give explicit attention to forms of tourism that reduce or avoid aviation wherever practical. The challenge is not to end travel, curiosity or cultural exchange, but to discover ways of travelling that are compatible with a rapidly warming world.
Electrified rail, electric cars and RVs, public transport, cycling, walking and lower-emission forms of sea travel can all reduce dependence on conventional aviation and fossil-fuel road transport. Where genuinely sustainable fuels become viable, they may also play a role in parts of the transport system that are harder to electrify.
The important distinction is between simply describing travel as “responsible” and making the carbon implications of the journey itself visible enough for people to make informed choices.
A place contains ecology, history, culture, architecture, food, language, memory and community. Travel becomes more meaningful when those dimensions are allowed to meet rather than being reduced to a list of attractions.
The developing Whole Life Universal Field of Knowledge can therefore connect a destination with articles, books, local organisations, ecological projects, cultural histories, films, interviews and carefully selected independent sources. That makes Travel & Places a natural bridge between geography and the many other fields we are mapping.
Regenerative travel asks what happens when visitors begin to think of themselves as temporary participants in a place. That can influence how they arrive, where they stay, what they buy, how they move, who benefits economically and whether their visit supports or undermines local ecological and cultural resilience.
